The debut album from Grimsby based band Shines, ‘How It Ends‘, marks a striking new chapter in the musical careers of Richard Dutton and Rob Cross. Formerly of So & So’s and Orphan Boy, respectively, an unexpected collaboration grew into a spectacular partnership.
‘How It Ends’ is a mesmerising blend of class guitar pop reminiscent of The Cure and The Stone Roses, blended with more the intimate feel of bedroom pop artists like The Drums and Castlebeat.
From the album’s opening track, ‘In My Heart’, you can sense the synergy between Dutton’s vocals and Cross’s guitar; brilliantly accompanied by Marc Poole’s bass and Chris Day’s drums. Shines released three standout singles, ‘Home’, ‘Stunt Double’ and ‘The End Of Something’ in the lead up to the album and they generated an incredible buzz around the band that has attracted lots of interest. The whole album feels familiar, yet refreshingly innovative – creating a bridge between their past and present endeavours.
‘How It Ends’ is a promising introduction to Shines, showcasing their ability to write incredible music – and they can back it up on the live stage too!
